THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE

It ate the cake. It did not eat the cake. Did it eat the cake?
She ate the cake. She did not eat the cake. Did she eat the cake?
We ate the cake. We did not eat the cake. Did we eat the cake?
They ate the cake. They did not eat the cake. Did they eat the cake?
Negative interrogative: Did you not eat the cake? Veya
(Olumsuz soru) Didn‟t you eat the cake? Gibi

Üstteki tabloda görüldüğü gibi;

Affirmative (olumlu) cümlelerde bütün öznelerden sonra fiilin, düzensiz ise 2. hali düzenli
ise –ed eklenir:

He washed the dishes.
They went to their hometown.
She held a party.
Ann criticised her manager.

Negative (olumsuz) cümlelerde bütün öznelerden sonra did not, kısaca didn’t getirilip fiilin
1. hali kullanılır:

My friends didn’t deny their faults.
He didn’t tell the truth.
Mary didn’t like his way of speaking.

Interrogative (soru) cümlelerinde ise bütün öznelerden önce „did‟ yardımcı fiili getirilir ve
fiil yine 1. hali ile kullanılır:

Did you lock the door?
Did the telephone ring last night?
Did she keep her promise?

 Kısaca past tense‟in sadece olumlu cümlelerinde fiil ikinci haliyle, diğer bütün durumlarda
birinci haliyle kullanılır.
