They were sleeping. They were not sleeping. Were they sleeping?
Negative interrogative: Were you not sleeping? veya
(Olumsuz soru) Weren‟t you sleeping? gibi

Üstteki tabloda görüldüğü gibi;

Affirmative (Olumlu) cümlelerde I, he,she, it öznelerinden sonra was, you,we they öznele-
rinden sonra were yardımcı fiili getirilir ve fiil –ing takısı alır:

They were selling eggs in the bazaar.
I was writing a letter to my friend last night.
He was talking to Mary on the phone the other day.
It was barking incessantly.

Negative (Olumsuz) cümlelerde yardımcı fiilden sonra sadece not (was not=wasn‟t , were
not= weren‟t) getirilir fiil yine –ing takısı alır:

We weren’t working last month.
I wasn’t studying for the exam yesterday.
He wasn’t expecting anybody.

Interrogative (Soru) cümlelerinde was/were yardımcı fiillerini özneden önce getiririz, fiil
yine –ing takısı alır:

Were you sleeping two hours ago?
Was he fishing yesterday?
Were they having dinner?
