 ‘of + noun yapısının iyelik belirtmede kullanımı:

Genellikle cansız varlıklar için kullanılır;

the colour of the pencil, the minarets of the mosque etc.

-Bununla birlikte of +noun yapısını kullanmayabiliriz;

the pencil colour, the mosque minarets

-Burada birinci ismin sıfat yerini almış olduğunu görüyoruz.

’s ve s’ in cansız varlıklarla kullanımı:

s ve s’ veya of +noun yapısını kullanabileceğimiz bazı yerler vardır. Görelim:

 coğrafi ifadelerde: : Turkey’s plains, America’s lakes
 bazı organizasyonlarda: : The Central Intelligence Agency’s plans (CIA)
The Criminal Investigation Department’s duty.(CID)

 yer ismi + superlative yapısında : Turkey’s coldest city, İstanbul’s tallest building etc...
kilise ve katedral isimlerinde : St. Paul’s Church, St. Stephen’s Cathedral
 zaman ifadelerinde: : an hour’s delay, a day’s work, today’s lessons etc...
 para + worth ifadesinde : ten dollar’s worth of chocolate, two lira’s worth of cheese

Kalıplaşmış bazı ifadeler vardır:

the earth’s surface exhaust etc...

 İki ismi birleştirmek için ‘of’ yapısının kullanımı:

Bir şeyin bölümlerinden bahsederken:

the bottom of the jar the inside of the box the top of the cupboard etc...

Soyut ifadelerde:

the cost of living, the price of success etc...

isim bir kelime grubu (phrase) veya cümlecik (clause) ile niteleniyorsa ‘of’ yapısını
kullanırız. Örneğin;

Can’t you see the book of the boy next to you?
