THE GERUND 236
Fiil + edat + gerund:
Pek çok fiilden sonra edat kullanılır, sonra da gerund gelir:
He didn’t apologize for cheating in the exam.
They insisted on complaining about the conditions.
She dreamt about being a teacher.
I approve of your trying to earn some money.
[En çok kullanılan ‘Fiil+edat’ listesi bkz. prepositions]
‘To’ edatı ile biten fiillerden sonra gerund:
accustom (oneself) to be accustomed to
face up to in addition to
look forward to object to
be reduced to resign oneself to
be resigned to resort to
sink to be used to
He is used to living in such conditions.
She objects to paying twice for the same thing.
I look forward to going out with her.
They had to face up to working till late hours.
We are accustomed to cooking together
I think it is preferable to accustom babies to sleeping on the stomach.
Sıfatlardan sonra gerund:
Bu tür cümleler genellikle ‘it’ öznesi ile başlar. Sıfattan sonra gerund kullandığımız gibi
to-infinitive de kullanabiliriz. Aradaki anlam farkına dikkat edin:
It’s difficult finding a job these days. (Şu an devam etmekte olan eylem)
It’s difficult to find a job these days. (Genel bir ifade)
Sıfatlardan sonra accusative (-i hali= me, him, them, Ann gibi) veya possessive
(iyelik=my, your, his, Ann’s gibi)
It’s ridiculous him/his talking like that.
It’s strange you/your living with her.
It+be+of+accusative (-i hali= me, him, them gibi) yapısından sonra da gerund kullanılır:
It was kind of him inviting us to his home.
It is rude of you behaving like that.
