Hem gerund hem de to-infinitive alan fiiller:
Bazı fiiller hem to-infinitive hem de gerund alabilir. Bu durumda aralarında hiç veya çok az
anlam farkı olur:
Her iki durumda anlam farkı olmayan fiiller:
Attempt, cease, begin, can’t bear, commence, continue, omit, start, intend fiilleri gerund
veya to-infinitive aldıklarında anlamlarında hiçbir değişiklik olmaz:
They began to live/living together.
He can’t bear to see/seeing me working.
The film ‘Titanic’ continued to take/taking the attention of many people.
I intend to sell/selling my car.
We never ceased to complain/complaining about the results of our exams.
Begin, continue, cease, start fiilleri progressive (-ing almış) durumdayken to-infinitive
alırlar:
They are beginning to understand what I told them two months ago.
We are continuing to make fun with him.
Allow, advise, permit, forbid, recommend fiillerinden sonra nesne gelirse to-infinitive
gelmezse direkt olarak gerund alırlar:
He recommends his students to study English.
He recommends studying English.
They didn’t permit me to go on a holiday.
They didn’t permit going on a holiday.
Need, want, require fiilleri de to-infinitive veya gerund alabilir:
Your son needs/wants/requires encouraging.
Your son needs/wants/requires to be encouraged.
Her iki durumda kullanıldığında biraz anlam değişikliğine uğrayan fiiller:
Dread, hate, like, love, prefer fiillerinden sonra to-infinitive veya gerund getirilebilir.
Anlamlarında çok az değişiklik olur:
He prefers reading book before going to his bed. (Genel bir durum)
He prefers to read book before going to his bed. (Belirli bir durum)
I dread swimming in this sea. (Genel bir durum)
I dread to hear about yesterday’s accident. (Belirli bir durum)
I hate interrupting your speech. (Genel bir durum)
I hate to interrupt your speech. (Belirli bir durum)
