DEMONSTRATIVE ADJECTIVES/PRONOUNS
(İşaret sıfatları/zamirleri)

İngilizce’de işaret sıfatlar aynı zamanda işaret zamiridir. Ama kullanım farkları vardır. Bunlar:
this, that, these, those

 İşaret zamirleri ile işaret sıfatlarının karşılaştırılması:

işaret sıfatları: Belirteç (determiner) durumundadır ve bir isimden önce gelir:

They bought that car. He shot this bird.

İşaret zamirleri: İsimlerden önce kullanılmayıp, nesneleri işaret eder:

He had stolen that car. (adjective) I had broken those plates. (= adjective)
He had stolen that. (pronoun) I had broken those. (= pronoun)

 İşaret zamirleri ‘What?’ soru sözcüğünden sonra kullanılır:

What is this/that? What are these/those?

 İşaret zamirleri‘Who?’ soru sözcüğünden sonra da kullanılır:

Who is this/that? Who are these/those?

 This/these bir durumu veya düşünceyi işaret edebilir:

I wasn’t able to pass the exam. This made me upset.
These aren’t logical resolutions.

 That uzaklık çağrıştırır. Çoğulu da those olduğuna göre uzaktaki şeyleri işaret eder:

Those are the holidays that will never be forgotten.
Those were the days, my friend; we thought they’d never end.

 Those‘who’ ile kullanıldığında kişileri işaret eder:

Those who disturbed him had better go away.
