Superlative’in nitelenmesi:

Superlative yapı, almost, altogether, by far, far, much, nearly, quite, the very gibi derecelen-
dirme zarflarıyla nitelenebilir:

She is quite/by far the best worker in our factory.
He is the very most interesting person I’ve ever seen.

 Comparatives and superlatives confused and misused (Karıştırılan ve yanlış
kullanılan sıfatlar)

İngilizce‟de bazı comparative ve superlative‟ler ya yanlış kullanılmakta ya da karıştırılmakta-
dır. Bunların en yaygınlarını görelim:

Better/worse:

Better, well sıfatının comparative halidir ve sağlığa işaret eder:

Are you quite well? –I am better now, thank you.
Are you well enough to go out? –I am better than you think.

Worse, ill sıfatının comparative halidir ve sağlığa işaret eder:

She has been ill for three weeks. And, now she is much worse.
Are you still ill? I am worse.

Elder/eldest:

Ailedeki fertler için kullanılır. „Daha yaşlı (elder) , en yaşlı (eldest) anlamında sadece niteleme
(attributive) sıfatı olarak kullanılırlar. Bu yüzden „than‟ elder ile karşılaştırma yapılırken kul-
lanılmaz:

my elder brother/son my eldest brother/son

The eldest ve the youngest‟tan sonra isim kullanımaz:

Mr. Genç is the eldest and I’m the youngest.
