Zaman zarfı olarak kullanıldığında past perfect tense‟li cümlenin sonunda kullanılır:
We loved the zoo so much. We hadn’t seen an alligator before.
(Hayvanat bahçesini çok sevdik. Daha önce bir timsah görmemiştik)
After: Bu bağlacın bulunduğu cümle past perfect tense iken ana cümle simple past tense
olur:
After he had found a solution, he didn’t care about anything.
(Bir çözüm bulduktan sonra hiç bir şeyi umursamadı)
After he had revised his book he sent it to the publisher.
(Kitabını gözden geçirdikten sonra yayımcıya gönerdi)
As soon as
They started chatting as soon as their teacher had left.
(Öğretmenleri ayrılır ayrılmaz çene yapmaya başladılar)
We left home as soon as the earthquake happened.
(Deprem olur olmaz evi terk ettik)
By the time/Until/Till
Till/Until/By the time the emergency team came, the man had died.
(Acil servis ekibi gelene kadar hasta ölmüştü)
Till/Until/By the time the students understood the subject the teacher had been exhausted.
(Öğrenciler konuyu anlayana kadar öğretmen bitmiş tükenmişti)
No sooner.......than
She had no sooner finished cooking than her friends came. veya
No sooner had she finished cooking her friends came.
(Yemek yapmayı bitirir bitirmez arkadaşları geldi)
When
Ana cümle past perfect tense olduğu zaman when‟li cümle simple past tense ile kullanılır:
He had married her when he won the lottery.
(Piyangoyu kazandığında onunla evlenmişti)
They had prepared the feast place when the guests came.
(Misafirler geldiğinde ziyafet yerini hazırlamışlardı)
