Bu yapı ile genellikle geleceğe ilişkin kararlaştırılmış, planlanmış işler belirtilir:
He is to set up his own work.
(Kendi işini kuracak)
Mr. Kocabıyık is to be chairman.
(Mr. Kocabıyık başkan olacak)
Ümit etme ifade edilebilir:
If I am to pass the exam, I have to study so hard.
If he is to win the prize, he should be more persevering.
Yasak veya görev bildirirken:
You are to prepare the breakfast before we get up.
He is not to go anywhere before he finishes his homework.
Was/were to
Geçmişte planlamış bir iş belirtilir, ama bu işin gerçekleşip gerçekleşmediği bilinmiyor:
She was to go abroad to attend a conference last month.
(Geçen ay bir konferansa katılmak için yurt dışına gidecekti)
To be due to
The plane is due to arrive from Ankara at 14.30.
(Uçak 14.30‟da Ankara‟dan gelecek/gelmesi bekleniyor)
To be about to/to be on the point of
Bir eylemin yapılma noktasında olduğu belirtilir:
He is about to be the head of his school.
(Okulun müdürü olacak/olmak üzere)
