307 ADVERBIAL CLAUSES

 Adverbial Clauses of Purpose:

 Amaç belirten zarf cümlecikleri What for? Ve For what purpose? Sorularına cevap
verirler, so that, in order that, in case, lest, for fear (that) ile yapılırlar:

 So that ve in order that ana cümle (main clause) present, present perfect veya future
tense’ lerde olduğu zaman may, can ve will ile kullanılabilirler. So that, in order that’e naza-
ran daha az kullanılır:

He has studied very hard so that/in order that he can pass his final exam.
(Sınavı geçebilsin diye çok sıkı çalıştı)

Peter speaks very slowly so that/in order that I can understand what he says.
(Peter, ne dediğini anlayabileyim diye çok yavaş konuşur)

We will give you a key so that/in order that you can get into the house whenever you like.
(İstediğiniz zaman eve girebilesiniz diye size bir anahtar vereceğiz)

 So that ve in order that ana cümle (main clause)’deki tense, simple past, past continuous
veya past perfect olduğu zaman should, would, could, might ile kullanılabilirler:

I raised my voice so that/in order that the students could hear me.
(Öğrenciler beni duyabilsin diye sesimi yükselttim)

She had worked hard so that/in order that everything would/could be ready by 8 o’clock.
(Her şey saat 8’e kadar hazır olsun diye çok sıkı çalışmıştı)

I left home early so that/in order that I should/would/might arrive at the meeting on time.
(Toplantıya zamanında varabileyim diye evden erken ayrıldım)

In case:

In case, olması düşünülen (olmayabilir de) bir duruma karşı yapılan hazırlık veya önlem al-
madır:

I will take my umbrella in case it rains.
(Yağmur yağabilir diye şemsiyemi alacağım)

They kept a spare room in case their guests came.
(Misafirleri gelebilir diye boş bir oda bulundurdular)

Mary is going to take some chocolate in case her son gets hungry.
(Mary, oğlu acıkabilir diye biraz çikolata götürecek)

He stayed at home all day long in case Peter phoned.
(Peter telefon edebilir diye bütün gün evde kaldı)
