Co-ordinate clauses (and, but, yet vb. ile birleştirilen cümleler) yerine kullanılır:

He went out of the school and hurried to the bus station
He went out of the school, hurrying to the bus station.
( Acele ederek, okuldan, otobüs durağına çıktı.)

She walked out of the room and slammed the door.
She walked out of the room, slamming the door.
(Kapıyı çarparak odadan çıktı)

Zaman ifade eden zarf cümlecikleri (adverbial clauses of time)’nin yerine kullanılır.

 Bunlardan sadece after, before, since, while, when bağlaçlarından sonra present participle
gelir:

Before he begins his project, he will compile information.
Before beginning his project, he will compile information.
(Projesine başlamadan önce bilgi derleyecek)

Since she came from Van, she has been living in Çanakkale
Since coming from Van, she has been living in Çanakkale.
(Van’dan geldiğinden beri Çanakkale’de yaşamaktadır)

After he graduates from university, he will get a well-paid job.
After graduating from university, he will get a well-paid job.
(Üniversiteden mezun olduktan sonra iyi maaşlı bir iş bulacak)

When he reaches his aim, he will be a very rich man.
Reaching his aim, he will be a very rich man.
(Amacına vardığında çok zengin bir adam olacak)

 When ve while bağlaçlarının yerine on ve in kullanabiliriz:

On/When arriving home, I discovered the burglary.
On/When asking for the manager, I was told I must wait.

In/While attempting to save a child from drowning, he nearly lost his life.
In/While trying to open the can, she cut her hand.

Neden belirten zarf cümlecikleri (adverbial clauses of reason) yerine kullanılır:

As we have no money, we can’t buy a new car.
Having no money, we can’t buy a new car.

Since she has been ill perhaps she will need help.
Being ill, perhaps she will need help.
