WISH CLAUSES

Wish cümlecikleri dilek ifade eden cümleciklerdir. Tense’in durumuna göre de pişmanlık
ifade edebilir.

Wish clauses (dilek cümlecikleri), öğrenenlerin en çok karıştırdığı konulardan biridir.
Bunun sebebi, geniş zaman (present) veya gelecek zaman (future)’a dair bir dilekte
bulunacağımız zaman past tense kullanmak zorunda olmamızdır. Şimdi bu ve bunun gibi
durumları inceleyelim:

 Wish + subject + past tense: (Present situation)

Bu kullanımıyla wish cümleciği, kişinin konuşma anındaki durumdan hoşnutsuzluğunu, mem-
nuniyetsizliğini belirtir. Be eylemi de bütün öznelerde were şeklinde kullanılır. Wish’ten sonra
that kullanmak isteğe bağlıdır:

I don’t know the answer to your question.
I wish I knew the answer to your question.
(Keşke sorunuzun cevabını bilsem)

Mary isn’t as hardworking as Bob.
Mary wishes she were as hardworking as Bob.
(Mary, Bob kadar çalışkan olmak istiyor)

He works until late hours, so he can’t go with you.
He wishes he didn’t work until late hours.
(Geç saatlere kadar çalışmamayı istiyor)

Mr. Genç isn’t here. I want to study with him.
I wish Mr. Genç were here.
(Keşke Mr. Genç burada olsa)

I don’t know what is going to happen, so I can’t help you.
I wish I knew what was going to happen.
(Keşke ne olacağını bilsem)

I can’t finish my term paper by the end of this week.
I wish I could finish my term paper by the end of this week.
(Keşke bu haftanın sonuna kadar dönem ödevimi bitirebilsem)
