219 THE PASIVE VOICE

▀ The passive with verbs of ‘saying’ and ‘believing’

acknowledge, admit, agree , arrange, assume, believe, claim, consider, decide, declare,
discover, expect, fear, feel, find, hope, imagine, know, mean, presume, report, rumour, say,
see, show, suggest, suppose, state, think, understand gibi fiillerle değişik şekillerde edilgen
cümle yapabiliriz:

 Birinci tip passive cimleye It’s + past participle ile başlar ve that-clause’u aynen ekle-
riz. İkinci tip passive cümleye ise isim cümlesindeki özne ile başlarız:

People think that money is everything.

It’s thought that money is everything
Money is thought to be everything.

They acknowledge that he is Turkey’s finest writer.

It’s acknowledged that he is Turkey’s finest writer.
He is acknowledged to be Turkey’s finest writer.

 Yan cümlenin eylemi past ise to have + past participle yapısını kullanırız:

They report that at least five people were killed in the accident..

It’s reported that at least five people were killed in the accident.
At least five people are reported to have been killed in the accident.

People know that PM supported the drug smugglers last year.

It’s known that PM supported the drug smugglers last year.
PM is known to have supported the drug smugglers last year.
