Must

 Gelecek zamana dair bir zorunluluk ifade ediyorsa, aktarılırken değişmez; yerine would
have to veya had to kullanılır:

“I must see a doctor tomorrow,” said Ali.
Ali said that he must/ would have to/ had to see a doctor the next day.
(Ali bir doktora görünmesi gerektiğini söyledi.)

“We must go early tomorrow,” said he.
He said that they must go early the next day. veya
He said that they would have to/ had to go early the next day.
(Onların yarın erken gitmeleri gerektiğini söyledi.)

 Must, present bir anlama sahipse aktarılırken değişmeyebilir veya yerine had to kullanı-
labilir:

“I must finish my project,” said John.
John said that he must/had to finish his project.
(John projesini bitirmesi gerektiğini söyledi.)

 Must tahmin belirttiği zaman aktarılırken değişikliğe uğramaz:

“Mary must be very clever,” said Ann.
Ann said that Mary must be very clever.

Might

 Rica anlamı hariç diğer durumlarda, aktarılırken değişikliğe uğramaz:

“Mr. Genç might stay with us tomorrow,” he said.
He said that Mr. Genç might stay with us the following/next day.
(Mr. Genç‟in yarın bizimle kalabileceğini söyledi.)

The authorities said: “ Many of the passengers might still be alive”.
The authorities said that many of the passengers might still be alive.
(Yetkililer yolcuların çoğunun halen hayatta olabileceğini söylediler.)

used to

“ I know Antakya very well because I used to live there,” he said.
He said that he knew Antakya very well because he used to live there.
