 Gücü yetebilme (ability) anlamında:

-Şu an „yapabilme‟ belirtiyorsa değişikliğe uğramadan aktarılır:

“I couldn’t solve the problem,” said Mary.
Mary said (that) she couldn’t solve the problem.
(Mary problemi çözemediğini söyledi.)

-Gelecek zamana dair „yapabilme‟ belirtiyorsa değişikliğe uğramadan aktarılır veya yerine
would be able to kullanılabilir:

“I could visit you tomorrow,” she said.
She said (that) she could/would be able to visit me the next/following day.
(Beni yarın ziyaret edebileceğini söyledi.)

 Type-2 koşul cümleciklerinde de could değişikliğe uğramadan aktarılır:

“If I had enough money , I could lend you some,” said Ann.
Ann said that if she had enough money, she could lend me some.
(Ann yeterli parası olsaydı, bana biraz ödünç verebileceğini söyledi.)

 İzin için kullanıldığında :

-Type-2 koşul cümleciklerinde could değişikliğe uğramadan aktarılır:
“If I did my homework I could go out,” said Peter.
Peter said that if he did his homework he could go out.
(Peter ödevini bitirirse dışarı çıkabileceğini söyledi.)

-Could geçmişte izin belirtiyorsa değişikliğe uğramadan aktarılır ya da yerine was/were
allowed to veya had been allowed to kullanılabilir:

She said, “In my childhood, I could play outside as long as I liked”
She said that in her childhood she could / was allowed to play outside...
had been allowed to
